Deadhead Miles
Deadhead miles are miles driven with an empty trailer, usually between a delivery and the next pickup. They consume fuel and hours without generating revenue, so they directly reduce a load's true rate per mile.
Why it matters
A load paying $3.00/mile loaded with 200 deadhead miles may net less than a $2.60/mile load with 20.
