What is Backhaul?

A backhaul is the return load a carrier books to avoid running empty back toward its home base or next origin. Backhaul rates are typically lower than headhaul rates but recover otherwise lost revenue.

The math that matters is total revenue per week, not rate per mile on any single leg.
