Detention is the charge a carrier bills when a driver waits at a shipper or receiver beyond the agreed free time, typically two hours. It compensates for lost driving hours and is billed per hour after the free window.

Arrival and departure timestamps are what make detention collectible. Without them, brokers deny the charge.
