What is Headhaul?

A headhaul is the primary, higher-paying direction of a freight lane — typically out of a region that produces more freight than it consumes. The opposite direction is the backhaul.

Why it matters in day-to-day operations

Lane balance is why the same 800 miles pays very differently depending on direction.
