IFTA
IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement, a fuel tax reporting arrangement among the lower 48 states and Canadian provinces. Qualifying carriers file one quarterly return reporting miles driven and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction, and the taxes are redistributed accordingly.
Why it matters
You need IFTA if your vehicle has two axles and a gross weight over 26,000 lbs, or three or more axles, and crosses state lines. Returns are due the last day of the month following each quarter.
